Hopefully you can read the author’s preface in this picture, as Amazon didn’t have one in their description, nor could I find one online, so I had to take a picture for you.   This edition is from 1963 and reads as such. It comes from a time when a parent (usually the Mother) could stay home and rear the children, ensure they were eating three healthy, nutritious meals each and every day and be there to answer questions/concerns their children had.

The cookbook may come across as patronizing in today’s hyper-political-correctness, but i enjoy reading the chapter introductions where the Mother is  described as cooking wholesome meals for her family, ensuring they are eating a well-balanced and nutritious meal, where they sit down together and actually eat as a family.  You could easily substitute “Father’ in place and enjoy the timely helpful tips and hints.

The recipes are specifically created for a burgeoning home economist, complete with tips on how to shop, what foods to buy and preparation hints. The recipes are simple enough for even the most beginner to attempt.  There are no complicated recipes, no hard-to-find ingredients and they are not time-consuming. There is even a meal schedule to help out with mealtimes throughout the year, picnic hints and recipes, party tips and recipes, even advice on how to cook for those on special diets.  Quite a bit of information that is still relevant in today’s world from 1963.

If you happen to find one in your used bookstore (or one online) I would heartily suggest adding to your cookbook collection as I have mine.
